Over eighteen months our team ran just over a thousand onboarding calls. We recorded the questions, not the answers, and the results were repetitive enough to be actionable.

The four questions

Where does my data live. What happens when something fails. Who on my team can see this. And how do I undo it. Some version of these four came up in more than eighty percent of calls.

Notice that none of them are about features. They are all about trust, and we had buried every answer in documentation nobody reads before they need it.

Answering in the product

We put a data residency line in the connection screen, a failure history on every integration, a live viewer list on shared resources, and an undo affordance on every destructive action. Four small surfaces, roughly five weeks of work.

What happened to the calls

Onboarding call volume fell by just over half. The calls that remained got substantially better, because they started at the interesting part instead of the first ten minutes of reassurance.
